Best climate in the World
According to a study carried out by Thomas Whitmore , director of investigation of the University of Syracuse (U.S.) , published by Consumer Travel Publications in 1996 under the title "Index of the most Pleasing climates", Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the city with the best climate in the world . This study analyses 600 towns throughout the world based on their touristic destination popularity and it's climatic changes during 1 year.
The climate of the island is determined by the influences of the geographical situation, the trade winds and the ocean currents. The trade winds arrive full of rain, they run up against the highest area of the island where the water condenses giving way to the vital contribution of water. The ocean currents that bathe the Islands are part of the Mexican Golf Stream, bringing cold water, which helps to keep the temperatures down in summer. These are relatively low in summer despite the Island's proximity to the Tropic of Cancer.

Thanks to these factors, the climate is warm, without violent temperature rises , that allow one to enjoy a temperature that ranges between 18 degrees in the coldest month (February) and 23 degrees in summer, the maximum for the season being 25 degrees. One must not forget the variations that occur within the island . One can enjoy the beaches and the sun even in winter, while up in the peaks of the island it is necessary to wear warm clothes, even though there are only 40 or 50 kms to the coast. The peaks are found at 1.950 mts above sea level and one may even find snow in winter.
The wind usually introduces the humidity from the Mexican Golf Stream into the interior of the island provoking a difference in temperature of 6 degrees. On occasions, the wind is hot and dry when it blows from the Sahara (the sirocco), which comes from the south and the east. Even though this wind arrives without force, it is strong enough to form the (calima) a cloud full of fine particles from the desert, which leaves tons of dust all over the islands. The weather from the south (moganero) appears every few years or so. It is the cause of the severe rains, which fill the dams and the ravines with enormous amounts of water.
